In this article I would like to introduce you a product nowadays I use every night. It is a free application called Sleep Cycle and it is manufactured by company called Northcube AB. The app is available for both Iphone and Android.
What it basically does is to track all of the phases and cycles of your sleep during the time when you are in bed. All you have to do is put your smartphone on airplane mode, turn on the application and leave it on fairly close distance from your head. You can put it on your night stand or mattress, but I typically put mine on the blanket that is on the ground near my bed. The airplane mode has actually nothing to do with the app by itself, I simply recommend you to use it in order to prevent any disruptions or interferences during the time when you in bed. It is important also to keep your phone plugged to power supply otherwise it may not track your sleep properly.
When woke up you are going to be able to see the whole diagram of your sleep for this particular night as long as for things like: time in bed, activity and most important sleep quality.
I myself find the app extremely handy and useful specially for some one who has sleep issues or for some reason is not able to get enough quality sleep.
Before I started using Sleep Cycle I felt really sleep deprived, because not so long ago did series of experiments with the polyphasic sleep approach and many other protocols for sleep reduction.
When I end with them experiments I came up with a conclusion that those methods are great and they have certain place, but they might not be that effective for a person who does a lot of resistant training.
For a long period of time I felt like I needed more or less to “Repair” my sleep. Because of the application I accomplished this relatively quickly.
Basically all I did was to start track everything I do during the day and see how that affects the percentage of my sleep quality. I experimented here and there and than my vision for sleep became completely different. In other words:
Nowadays my priority is to get “The best possible sleep” instead “Sleeping less as I can”. I also found having few extra hours of sleep is really not that bad, because I am able to do a lot more during the day, feel a lot more rested and My ability to focus and perform is definitely improved. So I find my self a lot more productive, something I always tried to achieve by sleep less…
The coolest part.
Besides everything I said above there is one thing that really makes me happy about the app and I am pretty sure it will definitely attract others. If you are interested in Lucid or Vivid dreaming, if you are the type of person who is fan of these practices and really enjoys how it feels on the day after… Than this one app is must for you. Personally I consider myself as the exact same type I just mentioned.
A tiny detail the app allows me to notice and start pay attention is the fact that all of the nights when I go above the 85% of sleep quality are pretty much the same nights when I have Lucid or at least Vivid Dream. So what I started to do is to track absolutely every single thing I do during the day. In fact I was already doing it, but now I became a lot more precise and it is well worthy. What I mean by this is I try to do everything exact the same way in order to produce identical if not the same results and it actually works great.
In other words I try to stay away from all of the things which can possibly prevent me from getting the above 85%. Instead I do everything that I know will get me where I want to be. I pay attention to my volume training in the gym, when I train, how many times a day, what I eat as long as for foods and brands, when I eat my meal (This one is huge because I am an OMAD practitioner and the time when I eat is close this when I go to the bed). Each and every different combination of these things will produce different results. The correct combinations lead to the desired results while the wrong ones my bring a lot of pain…
Application opened my eye for this like a technique type of thing and this improved not only the quality of my sleep but also that of my day tremendously. Vivid and Lucid dreams are probably the best possible guarantee a person gets into the deepest and most important Sleep Phase:
The “REM” aka RAPID EYE MOVEMENT…
