In the Golden Era of Bodybuilding a very common practice between bodybuilders specially Vince Gironda’s trainees was to drink the quota called “Muscle Building Shakes”. People like Frank Zane, Larry Scott (RIP), Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mohammed Makawy use to use em as a perfect mixture between highly bioavailable fat and protein sources. The shakes was invented by Gironda himself and Dr. Rheo Blair who created the first protein powder supplement. These drinks was mixture between Free Range Raw Organic Eggs ,Half and Half and the Rheo Blairs Protein Powder.
As you probably know if you read my blog or watch my videos I am huge fan, believer and practitioner of the Iron Guru’s methods. Probably at least 75 to 80 percent of the year I stay on hacked by myself versions of his world known “Steaks or Meat and Eggs Diet”. Since I found his whole approach, I always wanted to try them shakes and see how my body will respond, but there are several things and reasons which prevent me from incorporating them into my diet.
#1. No Half and Half Nor Whipping Cream
I do not know why, there is no any of that product in the stores where I live. There are some that come a bit close, but they are packed with sugars and other chemicals, so they are not what I need.
#2. No Raw Milk.
Few times to my head came the idea of producing my own H&H, by using Sour Cream and Raw Milk, I am not able to get my hand on that type of milk neither and on another hand I try to stay away from the milk in the grocery stores, because of the process of pasturation.
#3. Protein Powders Are Full Of Crap.
I am not sure what were all of the ingredients in the Rheo Blair’s protein, but the powders from current era usually consist all kinds of preservatives, additives and sugars such as maltodextrin , soy and others. So I really do not want to put these in my body.
While searching for some new useful information about ketosis and biohacking a while ago I listened to a podcast for the BulletProof Radio with Dr. Dominic D’agostino. In this episode he talks about nutritional ketosis, black ops and also mentions a sour cream and coconut oil pudding dessert he enjoys.
When I heard it an idea came to my head so I decided to improvise and see what is going to happen if I put together a mixture based on equal amounts of Full Fat Sour Cream and High in Protein Cottage cheese. So I did it and to be honest I was really satisfied with the results.
I know a lot of keto fans probably will criticize on me for choosing the cottage cheese, but I do not think this is a big deal, because in the end of the day my idea was to have something that is high in fat and protein while it has almost no carbohydrates, but also tastes great. So accordingly to my taste I think I achieved it plus the cottage cheese has been a staple food for many bodybuilders even those from the golden era. I think this is a perfect combination, since both of the products are virtually free of carbs. One is almost only protein while the other is only fat. In my personal opinion they are meant to be together and they have awesome flavor.
Personally I prefer to always keep the ratio even, but you can tweak things accordingly to your personal preference. For example you can find full fat cottage cheese or add some grass fed butter, some MCTS, Coconut oil for some additional calories from fat. You can also add some Ceylon Cinnamon or almonds if you like them.
Typically I prefer to not add any other stuff to the mix, but this just me.
Besides that all you need is Full Fat Preferably Organic Sour Cream and Cottage cheese that has no more than 3 to 4 carbs per 100gr.
Until next time.
Yours Truly.
